Launched in 1999, BMW quickly differentiated its off road vehicle by marketing it as an SAV, Sports Activity Vehicle, instead of SUV. The tweaked labeling was not a mere marketing gimmick as it pointed out at the sportier drive of X5. Like its main rivals, Mercedes M Class and Lexus RX, X5 also utilized unit-body frame, making it lighter and stable than a full fledge SUV but sturdier than a sedan and MPV. However, it couldn’t compete with even entry level SUVs, or similarly priced Land Rover Discovery, in off road capabilities, for that matter. Though X5 came equipped with its own set of technological goodies it was a tad too late to enter this niche market as Mercedes had already launched M Class in 1997 and Lexus came in with RX in 1998, making BMW’s X5 the last main entrant in this category.

BMW made up for the lost ground by incorporating Land Rover’s off road gadgets like “Hill Descent” and “Off Road Engine Management” systems, since at the time of X5′s launch Land Rover was under BMW ownership. Though these features weren’t substantially helpful in improving off road drive, because of X5′s lower ground clearance and flatter wheels, they did help a lot in marketing campaign and building X5′s perception as a stylish, sportier, off roader. BMW compromised off road capabilities in favor of incorporating an exhilarating driving experience and to bring it in line with BMW’s slogan of ultimate driving machine.

Engine Performance

Every 2012 Toyota RAV4 model is offered in two different engines with FWD or AWD. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that generates 179 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque along with a four-speed automatic or with an automatic limited-slip differential for FWD configuration. Fuel consumption with FWD is 22 mpg in the city/28 mpg on the highway/24 mpg combined. This decreases to 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway/24 mpg combined with AWD.

By the way, this new Mazda CX-5 is happy to run on 87 octane fuel. To compliment the race car engine and deliver more of that performance Mazda is so keen on they also added a new six-speed automatic transmission.
